《GB/T 17670-2008天然石材统一编号》由609（中国建筑材料联合会）归口，TC460（全国石材标准化技术委员会）执行，主管部门为中国建筑材料联合会。
本标准于1999年首次发布。本标准进出口种中涉及到欧洲等国出产的天然石材，参考了EN 12440：2000《天然石材命名》标准中英文名称。
本标准代替GB/T 17670-1999《天然石材统一编号》。本标准规定了天然石材的分类与命名、编号原则、名称与编号。本标准适用于花岗石、大理石、石灰石、板石、砂岩等商业用途的建筑装饰石材。本标准与GB/T 17670-1999相比主要差异如下：
――范围和分类中增加了石灰石和砂岩商业石材种类；
――引用标准中取消了花岗石和大理石产品标准；
――增加了石材产地代码对照表；
――石材产地顺序代码由两位数字改变 两位数字或字母组成。
――增加了石材品种的英文名称和具体产地地名；
――增加了进出口石材中英文对照表。

Unified catalogue for natural stone

1 Scope

This standard specifies the classification and designation, catalogue principles, names and catalogue of natural stones.

This standard applies to granite, marble, limestone, slate, sandstone and other building decorative stones for commercial purposes.

The following documents contain provisions which, through reference in this standard, constitute provisions of this standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments (excluding corrections), or revisions, of any of these publications do not apply to this standard. However, parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. 3 Classification and Designation

3.1 Classification

Base on commercial purposes, natural stone materials are mainly classified into:

a) granite;

b) marble;

c) limestone;

d) sandstone;

e) slate.

3.2 Designation

3.2.1 The Chinese names shall be determined according to the distinguishable features such as the name of origin, pattern tone, stone type, etc.

3.2.2 For English names, the customary usage or foreign trade names shall be adopted.
