Introduction

1. Background and significance of the standard

GB/T 1817-2017 "Test method for impact toughness of cemented carbide at room temperature" was issued on October 14, 2017 and officially implemented on May 1, 2018. This standard replaces the original GB/T 1817-1995. The main changes include:

  • Modified the principle statement
  • Added normative reference documents
  • Added the parallelism requirements of the specimen
  • Added the tolerance requirements for the span of the anvil
  • Added the test environment temperature requirements

This standard was proposed by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association and is managed by the National Technical Committee for Nonferrous Metals Standardization.

2. Comparative Analysis of Standard Frameworks

Standard Number Release Year Main Modifications
GB/T 1817-2017 2017 Added specimen parallelism requirements, increased anvil span tolerance, and clarified test temperature requirements
GB/T 1817-1995 1995 - Deleted deflection requirements

3. Interpretation of Standard Technical Requirements

3.1 Test Equipment Requirements

The impact test machine should comply with the provisions of GB/T 3808. A pendulum impact test machine should be used. The normal use range is 10%-90% of the maximum impact energy. The testing machine needs to be regularly calibrated according to JJG 145.

3.2 Specimen preparation and requirements

  • Use square cross-section specimens without notches, with dimensions shown in Table 2
  • The surface of the specimens shall be frosted and free of scratches, cracks and other defects
  • The specimen mark shall be engraved on the end of the semi-finished product

3.3 Test steps and result calculation

The test steps include:

  1. Test preparation: The ambient temperature is controlled at 10°C-35°C
  2. Specimen test: Measure the size with a vernier caliper and check the parallelism
  3. Impact test: Accurately record the impact energy consumption
  4. Result calculation: Calculate the impact toughness value according to formula (4)

4. Implementation suggestions

To ensure the correct implementation of the standard, it is recommended that:

  • Prepare the specimens strictly as required, and check their surface quality and parallelism
  • Regularly calibrate the impact tester to ensure that the equipment accuracy meets the requirements
  • Record all test data to ensure traceability
  • Analyze abnormal results and retest when necessary
