Scope
This document specifies the performance requirements and test methods for metal oxide varistors (MOVs) used in low-voltage surge protective devices (SPDs) for use in power supply, communications, and signal systems operating at 1000V AC or less (50Hz or 60Hz, RMS) or 1500V DC or less, to protect equipment and personnel from transient voltages. This document applies to single MOVs and MOVs with thermal protection (thermal protection varistors (TPVs)). It does not apply to MOV combinations connected to other overvoltage protection components. The characteristics given in this document apply to MOVs installed in the test method and do not apply to MOVs installed in other ways that may affect performance. This document does not consider thermal protection varistors (TPVs) to be SPDs.
