Scope

NOTE: Carbon steels, low alloy steels, and cast irons selected in accordance with this standard are resistant to cracking in the hydrogen sulfide-containing environments specified in oil and gas production, but not necessarily in all service environments. It is the responsibility of the equipment user to select the appropriate carbon steel, low alloy steel and cast iron for the intended service environment. This part of GB/T 20972 gives the requirements and recommended practices for the selection and evaluation of carbon steel and low alloy steel for equipment in the environment containing hydrogen sulfide (HS) in oil and gas extraction and natural gas processing plants. hazard to the public, personal health and safety, or the environment. Use of this section will help avoid this costly corrosion damage. This standard is a supplement to those appropriate design codes, standards and guidelines, but does not replace their requirements for materials. This part describes the resistance of steels to damage caused by sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and the related phenomena of stress-oriented hydrogen-induced cracking (SOHIC) and soft zone cracking (SZC). This section also describes the resistance of steels to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and possible development of step cracks (SWC). This standard deals only with cracking and not with loss of material due to general corrosion (loss of mass) or localized corrosion.
