Terminology for valves
1 Scope
This standard is applicable to all types of valves.
2 Terms
2.1
valve
generic term for mechanical products with movable mechanisms used to control the media in pipelines
2.2 Types of valves
2.2.1 Types of valves related to structure
2.2.1.1
gate valve
valve where the disc (wedge) is driven by the stem to rise and fall linearly along the seat (sealing face)
2.2.1.2
globe valve, stop valve
valve where the disc is driven by the stem to rise and fall linearly along the seat (sealing face) axis
2.2.1.3
throttle valve
valve to change the cross-sectional area of the passage through the movement of the disc so as to adjust the flow and pressure
2.2.1.4
ball valve
valve where the ball is driven by the stem to rotate around the axis of the stem
2.2.1.5
butterfly valve
valve where the disc is driven by the stem to rotate around the axis of the stem
2.2.1.6
diaphragm valve
valve where the disc (diaphragm) moves up and down along the axis of the stem in the valve and the deformation of the disc (diaphragm) will separate the operation mechanism from the medium
2.2.1.7
plug valve
valve where the disc (plug) is driven by the stem to rotate around the axis of the stem
2.2.1.8
check valve, non-return valve
valve where the disc automatically prevents medium flow in the reverse direction by means of the medium force
2.2.1.9
safety valve, pressure
valve where the disc automatically opens to discharge medium when the medium pressure in the pipeline or equipment exceeds the specified value; the disc automatically closes when such pressure is lower than the specified value, so as to protect the pipeline or equipment
2.2.1.10
pressure reducing valve
valve where the disc restricts the flow to reduce the medium pressure and automatically keep the downstream pressure in a certain range by the direct action of the pressure difference
2.2.1.11
steam trap
valve that automatically discharges condensate and prevents steam from discharging with water
2.2.1.12
blow-down valve
valve for blowdown of boilers, pressure vessels and other equipment
2.2.1.13
control valve, adjusting valve
valve where the disc is intended to be used in either closed or fully open position to change the cross-sectional area of the passage so as to adjust the flow, pressure or temperature
2.2.1.14
dividing valve
valve where the disc changes its position to influence the proportion of flow from a common inlet to form two or more outlet flows
2.2.1.15
mixing valve
valve where the disc changes its position to influence the proportion of two or more inlet flows to form a common outlet flow
2.2.1.16
hydraulic control valve
generic term for valves which achieve multi-purpose control function through different structures using the hydraulic control principle
2.2.2 Types of valves related to actuating mode
2.2.2.1
manual operated valve
valve operated manually by means of handwheel, handle, lever or sprocket
2.2.2.2
electrical operated valve
valve operated by electric, electromagnetic or any other electrical actuator
2.2.2.3
hydraulically/pneumatically operated valve
valve operated by means of the pressure of liquid (water, oil and other liquid media) or air
2.2.3 Types of valves related to pressure and temperature
2.2.3.1
low pressure valve
valve with nominal pressure not greater than PN16
2.2.3.2
middle pressure valve
valve with nominal pressure of PN16~PN100 (excluding PN16)
2.2.3.3
high pressure valve
valve with nominal pressure of PN100~PN1000 (excluding PN100)
2.2.3.4
super high pressure valve
valve with nominal pressure greater than PN1000
2.2.3.5
high temperature valve
valve used for medium temperature t > 425℃
