Introduction

1. Background of standard formulation and analysis of technical evolution

With the continuous development of social economy, people's requirements for meteorological information services are getting higher and higher. Weather graphic symbols in public meteorological services have become one of the important ways to convey meteorological information and are widely used in various news media. Due to differences in design concepts and expressions, the weather graphic symbols used in different places are not the same, which affects the effect of public use of meteorological information. This standard is compiled to standardize the weather graphic symbols of public meteorological services across the country and make them more standardized.

2. Comparative analysis of standard frameworks

Dimensions Old version GB/T 22164—2008 New version GB/T 22164—2017
Wind force level symbols The symbol design for wind forces above level 8 is not clear The symbols for wind forces above level 8 have been revised, and more detailed descriptions have been added
Weather phenomenon coverage Common weather phenomena are covered, but some extreme weather phenomena are not clear Extreme weather symbols such as heavy rain, very heavy rain, tornado, typhoon, etc. have been added, and the symbols for showers and dense fog have been deleted
Color regulations Clarify color matching Delete the color regulations of graphic symbols and simplify the visual expression

3. Implementation suggestions

3.1 Suggestions for the application of standardized symbols

  • The media and meteorological departments should give priority to the use of weather graphic symbols in this standard to ensure the consistency of information transmission.
  • During use, appropriate artistic processing (such as animation or resizing) can be performed on the symbols, but the basic structure must remain unchanged.
  • For public education, the importance of standardized weather symbols can be popularized through case analysis and publicity brochures.

3.2 Suggestions for symbol design optimization

  • Future versions may consider adding more dynamic expressions of extreme weather phenomena (such as hail and sandstorms).
  • Optimize the visual recognition of symbols so that they can be clearly displayed on different screen sizes and resolutions.
  • Establish a training system for standardized symbols to ensure that meteorological information service personnel correctly understand and apply the standards.
