GB/T 33678—2017 Standard Overview
This standard specifies the technical requirements for the VLF-LF three-dimensional lightning positioning network, including system composition, communication network, positioning algorithm, technical indicators and environmental adaptability.
System composition and functions

Table 1 shows the key technical indicators of the three-dimensional lightning positioning network. The following is a detailed interpretation of some indicators:
- Lightning return stroke time accuracy is better than 10-4 s: ensure high-precision lightning event capture.
- Average positioning accuracy plane <1000m: suitable for lightning monitoring networks in larger areas.
Environmental adaptability and installation requirements
Lightning detection station must meet the following requirements:
- Operating temperature range: -35°C~+50°C
- Relative humidity: 5%~100%
- The installation site should be flat and open to avoid electromagnetic interference
Lightning protection requirements and protective measures
To ensure the safe operation of the system, the following lightning protection measures must be taken:
- Direct lightning protection: The detection station should be within the protection range of the lightning arrester, with a grounding resistance of ≤4Ω.
- Lightning electromagnetic pulse protection: Use shielded cables and equipotential connections, and install SPDs (surge protectors).
Functional flow of the data processing center
The data processing center is responsible for receiving, storing and analyzing lightning data. Its functions include:
- Real-time data analysis and three-dimensional positioning
- Historical data playback and repositioning
- Data output and service interface
Implementation suggestions
Precautions in practical application
In actual deployment, it is recommended to:
- Choose an appropriate baseline distance according to the terrain conditions (100-150 km in mountainous areas and 150-200 km in plains).
- Avoid straight-line arrangement of sites and form a parallelogram or square site network structure.
