Introduction
Interpretation of the standard for flange forgings for low temperature environments
GB/T 34356-2017 "Flange forgings for low temperature environments" is a technical specification for carbon steel or alloy steel flange forgings used in environments of -73°C to -29°C, aiming to ensure the reliability and safety of products in extreme temperatures.
Comparison of standard frameworks
| Dimensions | GB/T 34356—2017 | ASTM A961/A961M | MSS SP-44 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applicable temperature range | -73°C to -29°C | -101°C to room temperature | -54°C to room temperature |
| Material requirements | Carbon steel or alloy steel, 8 steel grades, 3 strength grades | General purpose steel forgings specification | Carbon steel and alloy steel flanges |
| Testing methods | Tensile test, impact test, ultrasonic test | Mechanical property test, non-destructive testing | Mechanical properties and non-destructive testing |
Technical requirements interpretation
Material selection and forging process
The standard clearly requires that the raw material smelting of flange forgings must adopt advanced processes such as vacuum degassing, refining outside the furnace or electroslag remelting to ensure the purity of the material. It is recommended to use vacuum induction furnace (VIM) and vacuum self-consumable (VAR) methods to produce high-purity steel ingots.
Mechanical properties and impact toughness
The standard specifies four strength grades, with yield strength ranging from 290MPa to 515MPa and tensile strength ranging from 415MPa to 620MPa. Special emphasis is placed on the average minimum impact value (e.g. ≥41J) and the single minimum impact value (e.g. ≥33J) in low temperature environments to ensure the toughness of the material under extreme conditions.
Implementation suggestions
- Design selection:Select the appropriate steel grade and strength grade according to the operating temperature, and match them with the mechanical properties data in Table 2.
- Manufacturing:Strictly follow the forging, heat treatment and testing processes specified in the standard. It is recommended to use automated forging equipment to improve consistency.
- Quality control:Establish a complete inspection system, focusing on key links such as chemical composition analysis, ultrasonic flaw detection and impact testing.
