Introduction

Interpretation of the National Standard of the People's Republic of China GB/T 34580—2017

This standard specifies the determination method of colored insoluble substances in running turbine oil, and is applicable to the detection of related substances in running turbine oil and phosphate ester fire-resistant oil without adding dyes.

Analysis of the background of standard formulation and technological evolution

With the improvement of modern industry's requirements for lubricating oil performance, the monitoring of insoluble colored substances in oil products is particularly important. As an efficient and accurate determination method, the membrane colorimetry has been widely used both internationally and domestically. ASTM D 7843—2012 standard provides an important reference for this national standard.

Sample pretreatment and test steps

Sample pretreatment:

  • Sampling volume: at least 60mL, preferably using brown containers to prevent ultraviolet interference.
  • Heating and aging: heating at 60℃-65℃ for 23h-25h, then placing at 15℃-25℃ to isolate ultraviolet rays for 68h-76h.

Test steps:

  1. Shake the sample and transfer it to a beaker.
  2. Add petroleum ether, mix well and filter.
  3. Wash the filter membrane and air dry to establish a blank background.
  4. Use a colorimeter to measure the color of the membrane and calculate the CIELAB colorimetric value.

Result calculation and reporting requirements

Calculate L*, a*, b* values according to formulas (1), (2) and (3), and use formula (4) to calculate ΔE color difference. One decimal place should be retained in the report, and the arithmetic mean of the two measurements should be taken as the final result.
