Overview of GB/T 36397—2018 Quality Standard for Classification of American Ginseng
This standard specifies the terms and definitions, technical requirements, inspection methods, inspection rules, signs, labels and packaging, as well as transportation and storage of American ginseng products. It is applicable to the classification and inspection of American ginseng.
1. Background of Standard Formulation
This standard was proposed and coordinated by the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Ginseng and Antler Products (SAC/TC 403), reflecting the urgent need for quality control of American ginseng in the industry. The drafting units include Jilin Ginseng Research Institute, National Ginseng and Antler Products Supervision and Inspection Center and other authoritative institutions, ensuring the scientificity and authority of the standard.
2. Classification and terminology of American ginseng
American ginseng is divided into two types: hard branch and soft branch:
- Hard branch American ginseng: the processing temperature is higher than $50~^{\circ}C$, the cross section is milky white and powdery.
- Soft branch American ginseng: the processing temperature is lower than $50~^{\circ}C$, the cross section is yellowish white and oily.

- Ginsenoside Rb₁ content: ≥2.00%

Inspection methods include sampling, specification grade inspection and physical and chemical index testing. To ensure the effective implementation of the standard, it is recommended that:
