Introduction

Overview

GB/T 36817-2018 "Identification and Quarantine Methods for Airplane Grass" stipulates the quarantine and identification methods for airplane grass, including principles, on-site monitoring and collection, laboratory inspection and identification, identification characteristics and result evaluation.

Instruments and apparatus

Stereomicroscope: $10\times\sim40\times$, with eyepiece micrometer or stage micrometer.
Electronic balance: accuracy $0.0001$.
Sieve mesh: $5.0~\mathrm{mm}, 2.5~\mathrm{mm}, 1.5~\mathrm{mm}, 1.0~\mathrm{mm}$.

On-site monitoring and collection

Observe the morphological characteristics of suspected airplane grass plants or seeds with the naked eye, magnifying glass or stereo microscope for identification. Take photos and collect samples for laboratory testing.

Laboratory testing and identification

Test samplesProcessing methods
Plant samplesObserve morphological characteristics with the naked eye or magnifying glass.
Raw grains and seedsPrepare average samples, pick out weed seeds after sieving and separation, and observe with a stereo microscope.

Identification characteristics

Plants of the genus Pteris are annual or perennial herbs, semi-shrubs or shrubs. Leaves are usually opposite, entire, serrated or three-lobed. The flower heads are small or medium-sized, arranged in corymbs or compound corymbs at the tips of stems and branches.

Result evaluation and preservation

Based on the morphological characteristics of complete plants and mature achenes, it can be judged if it meets the identification characteristics. The detected airplane grass specimens and samples should be properly preserved for at least 6 months.

Implementation suggestions

1. Strengthen quarantine in international trade to prevent the invasion of alien species.
2. Improve the professional capabilities of inspection and quarantine personnel to ensure accurate identification.
3. Use advanced technologies (such as molecular biology methods) to assist identification.
