Introduction
Guidelines for the Functional Configuration of Science and Technology Museums - Interpretation of the National Standard GB/T 43394—2023
1. Background and significance of standard formulation
With the rapid development of science and technology and the need to improve the public's scientific literacy, the role of science and technology museums in popular science services has become increasingly important. GB/T 43394—2023 "Guidelines for the Functional Configuration of Science and Technology Museums" came into being, aiming to standardize the functional settings of science and technology museums at all levels and ensure that they can efficiently serve the public's popular science needs.
The standard was proposed by the China Association for Science and Technology and is managed by the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Popular Science Services. The background of its formulation mainly includes:
- Filling the standardization gap in the field of functional configuration of science and technology museums in China
- Adapting to the needs of high-quality development of science popularization in the new era
- Promoting the standardization and modernization of the science and technology museum system
2. Classification and configuration principles of science and technology museum functions
2.1 Functional classification
According to GB/T 43394-2023, the functions of science and technology museums are mainly divided into three categories:
- Educational function: as the core function, including exhibition display, educational activities, online science popularization and film and television science popularization.
- Research function: supporting function, covering educational resource research and development and academic research.
- Service function: guarantee function, mainly including audience service and radiation service.
2.2 Configuration Principles
The functional configuration of the science and technology museum should follow the following principles:
- Conformity: Reflect the construction concept of the science and technology museum and the characteristics of participation, interaction and experience.
- Adaptability: Match the local economic, population and technological development level.
- Development: Adjust in time with social needs and technological progress.

3. Functional Configuration Suggestions for Science and Technology Museums at All Levels
3.1 National Science and Technology Museums
National science and technology museums should comprehensively cover education, research and service functions, focus on international and domestic exchanges and cooperation, and highlight the display of national scientific and technological achievements and world scientific and technological cutting-edge content.
- Exhibitions: Reflect the world's cutting-edge technology development and my country's contribution to science and technology
- Educational resource development: Provide shared services for the whole country
- Academic research: Promote the theory and development research of science and technology museums
3.2 Provincial Science and Technology Museums
Provincial science and technology museums need to be appropriately simplified on the basis of national science and technology museums, highlighting regional characteristics and popularization of basic science.
- Educational function: Comprehensive coverage and reflect local characteristics
- Research function: Focus on the development of educational resource development
- Service function: Provide guidance and support for the province's science and technology facilities
3.3 Municipal Science and Technology Museums
Municipal science and technology museums should focus on education and audience services and appropriately develop radiation functions.
- Exhibitions: Focus on combining basic science with local characteristics
- Educational activities: Carry out diversified and regular science popularization activities
- Service functions: Provide technical support for the city and its surrounding areas
3.4 County-level science and technology museums
County-level science and technology museums should focus on basic science popularization functions and pay attention to serving local communities and schools.
- Core functions: exhibitions and educational activities
- Online science popularization: can be carried out appropriately according to conditions
- Service objects: local enterprises, institutions, schools and communities
4. Implementation suggestions and future development
4.1 Improving the quality of educational activities
Science and technology museums should combine exhibitions and exhibits to carry out science popularization activities in various forms and with strong interactivity. For example:
- Organize scientific experiment demonstrations and experience activities
- Organize science and technology competitions and summer and winter camps
- Use the Internet platform to carry out online science courses
4.2 Strengthen technical research and development capabilities
Science and technology museums at all levels should focus on the research and development and innovation of educational resources, for example:
- Develop scientific and educational materials suitable for different age groups
- Use virtual reality technology to create an immersive science experience
- Establish a standardized resource library for sharing
4.3 Optimize service models
Science and technology museums should improve the audience service system and actively expand their radiation functions:
- Establish an integrated service system for reservation, guided tours and consultation
- Provide science resources and technical support for remote areas
- Strengthen international cooperation and experience exchange
5. Practical application case analysis
Take a provincial science and technology museum as an example, its functional configuration is as follows:
- Educational function: comprehensive coverage of exhibitions, educational activities and online science popularization
- Research function: focus on the development of educational resources research and development, and appropriately carry out academic research
- Service function: provide technical support for the province's science and technology museums and other science popularization facilities
Through this case, it can be seen that the functional configuration of science and technology museums at all levels needs to be flexibly adjusted according to their own positioning and development stage.
