Introduction

Background and Significance of the Standard Revision

GB/T 5463.3-2025, "Vocabulary of Non-metallic Mineral Products Part 3: Gypsum," was released in 2025 as the foundational terminology standard for the gypsum industry and will replace the 2013 edition. This revision fully reflects the technological advancements and industrial upgrades in the gypsum industry over the past decade. By adding 72 new terms, revising 12, and deleting two, the total number of terms has reached 136, establishing a more comprehensive terminology system for the gypsum industry.

Main Technical Changes and Updates

The 2025 version of the standard has been comprehensively upgraded based on the 2013 version, which is mainly reflected in the following dimensions:

Revision category Number of terms in the 2013 version Number of terms in the 2025 version Range of change
Gypsum ore terms 8 14 +75%
Composition and processing terms 6 12 +100%
Terminology for Gypsum Products 24 68 +183%
Terminology for Industrial By-product Gypsum 8 14 +75%

Updated Definitions of Key Terms

The standard has made scientific revisions to several core terms:

Gypsum (3.1): It is clearly defined as "a calcium sulfate crystalline mineral containing two hydrates of crystallization", and supplemented with XRD characteristic diffraction peak data (d₂₀=0.7630nm, d₂₁=0.4283nm, d₄₁=0.3065nm), providing a technical basis for mineral identification.

Anhydrite (3.2): Defined as "a calcium sulfate crystalline mineral containing no crystalline water," detailed XRD characteristic parameters are also provided.

Innovation in the Gypsum Product Classification System

The biggest highlight of the 2025 standard is the establishment of a complete gypsum product classification system, with 44 new product terms added, covering the entire industry chain from raw materials to deeply processed products:

Cementitious Materials Series

Newly added terms such as Gypsum Cementitious Materials, Gypsum Composite Cementitious Materials, α-Type High-Strength Gypsum, and Type II Anhydrous Gypsum Cementitious Materials reflect the development of gypsum-based material technology.

Gypsum Board Product Series

Detailed standardization of various gypsum board terminology, including ordinary gypsum board, water-resistant gypsum board, fire-resistant gypsum board, as well as the newly added formaldehyde-free gypsum board and high-density gypsum board, reflecting the development trend of functional gypsum board.

New Gypsum-Based Materials

Newly added terms such as gypsum-based self-leveling mortar, mechanical spray plastering gypsum, and mildew-resistant and water-resistant plastering gypsum mortar meet the needs of industrialized construction.

Improvement of the terminology system for industrial by-product gypsum

The standard replaces the term "chemical gypsum" in the 2013 version with industrial by-product gypsum, which more accurately reflects the source and characteristics of this type of material:

Types of by-product gypsum Main components Application areas
Phosphogypsum (6.2) Calcium sulfate dihydrate Building materials, soil improvement
Desulfurized gypsum (6.4) Calcium sulfate dihydrate Gypsum board, plastering gypsum
Titanium gypsum (6.5) Calcium sulfate dihydrate Cement retarder
Fluorogypsum (6.3) Type II anhydrous calcium sulfate Cementitious material

Six new types of industrial by-product gypsum terms, including citric acid gypsum, nickel gypsum, and copper gypsum, have been added to reflect the requirements of the development of a circular economy.

Standard Implementation Recommendations and Technical Applications

Applications in Geological Exploration

The gypsum ore terminology (3.3-3.5) in the standard provides a unified classification basis for geological exploration. In particular, the newly added terminology of mixed gypsum ore resolves the previous classification challenge of gypsum and anhydrite co-occurring ores.

Product Quality Control Applications

Gypsum grade terminology (4.1-4.3) provides a technical basis for product quality grading. The clear definitions of gypsum crystallization water and gypsum adhering water facilitate the accurate determination of the chemical composition of gypsum raw materials.

Product R&D and Innovation

The newly added gypsum phase terms (4.8-4.12) provide a theoretical foundation for gypsum material research and development. In particular, the distinction between the three types of anhydrous gypsum (Type I, Type II, and Type III) is crucial for the development of new gypsum-based materials.

Standardization and Trade

A unified terminology system helps eliminate technical barriers in international trade and promote the internationalization of Chinese gypsum products and technologies.

Industry Impact and Development Trends

The implementation of GB/T 5463.3-2025 will have a profound impact on the gypsum industry:

Technological Innovation: The improvement of the standard will promote the research and development and application of new gypsum-based materials, particularly in areas such as green building and industrial solid waste resource utilization.

Industrial Upgrading: Through the unification and standardization of terminology, the gypsum industry will be driven towards standardization and high-end development, enhancing product added value and market competitiveness.

Strengthening International Cooperation: A terminology system aligned with international standards is conducive to strengthening international technical exchanges and cooperation, and promoting the "going global" of my country's gypsum industry.

This standard was jointly drafted by 12 organizations, including Suzhou Sinoma Non-metallic Minerals Industrial Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., and brings together the wisdom and experience of industry experts to ensure the scientific nature and practicality of the standard.
