Background of standard formulation and analysis of technological evolution

This standard replaces the previous GB/T6118-1996. The main modifications include updating the writing format, adding high-performance high-speed steel material requirements and adjusting the test methods. The standard was proposed by the China Machinery Industry Federation and is applicable to end mills produced in accordance with GB/T6117.1, GB/T6117.2 and GB/T6117.3.

Case Study on the Implementation of Material and Hardness Requirements

The working part of the end mill needs to be made of W6Mo5Cr4V2 or high-speed steel (code HSS) with equivalent performance, and high-performance high-speed steel (code HSS-E) can also be used. 45 steel is recommended for the shank material. In terms of hardness requirements, the HRC values of ordinary high-speed steel products at different diameters are adjusted to ensure that they have sufficient strength and durability.


Testing standards for appearance and surface roughness

The surface of end mills shall not be subject to defects such as cracks and chipping. For different types of shanks, the surface roughness requirements are as follows:

  • Outer circle of ordinary straight shank or threaded shank: Ra ≤ 1.25 µm
  • Flattened straight shank and 2° beveled flattened straight shank, taper shank: Ra ≤ 0.63 µm

Comparative analysis of standard framework

Compared with GB/T6118-1996, this standard has been updated in terms of writing format, material requirements and testing methods. In particular, the use specifications of high-performance high-speed steel (HSS-E) have been added, which further improves the performance and reliability of milling cutters.

  2. Strengthen material selection and hardness control to ensure that products meet new requirements.
