Analysis of the background of the standard and the technical evolution

GB/T 8038—2023 is a standard for the gas chromatography determination of hydrocarbon impurities in coking toluene, which replaces the previous GB/T8038—2009. This standard mainly conducts quantitative analysis of impurities such as benzene, C₈ aromatics and non-aromatics in coking toluene.

The technical evolution of this standard is reflected in many aspects: first, the scope of application is adjusted and the determination object is clarified; second, the requirements for chromatographic columns and stationary phases are optimized to improve the separation effect; finally, the area normalization method is introduced to enrich the detection means.

Case study: practical application of internal standard method

A coking enterprise used the internal standard method to detect the impurity content in toluene, and selected n-decane as the internal standard. By adjusting the temperature of the chromatographic column and the carrier gas flow rate, benzene, ethylbenzene and other components were successfully separated, and reliable quantitative results were obtained. The repeatability error of this method was controlled within 0.05%.
