Scope

This part of GB/T 8190 specifies the measurement methods for two kinds of smoke exhaust characteristics of reciprocating internal combustion engines (RIC) under steady-state conditions. One method is to evaluate the extinction degree of exhaust smoke by measuring the brightness of the light beam, and the other method is to evaluate the soot content by measuring the blackness of filter paper. Separate requirements may also be specified for specific purpose engines, if necessary. This part of GB/T 8190 does not involve the measurement of transient conditions. 'Using a smoke meter under transient conditions, due to the different types of instruments, the results obtained cannot be compared unless the sampling conditions are the same and the characteristics of the instruments are similar. This part of GB/T 8190 applies to land, railway traction and marine reciprocating internal combustion engines, including engines used to drive agricultural tractors and road vehicles. This section also applies to driving road construction and earth moving machinery, industrial trucks and other engines that do not yet have a suitable national standard for measuring exhaust smoke. NOTE: If water is sprayed into the exhaust system, measurements or samples should only be taken upstream of the water spray.
