Introduction

Core content of the standard update

Update dimensions 2007 edition 2024 edition Technical significance
Chromatographic methods 12 types New HILIC, 4 ion exchange chromatography, a total of 18 types Covering new analytical methods such as biomacromolecules and ionic compounds
Instrument classification 5 categories Refined to 8 categories (including UHPLC, SFC, etc.) Adapt to new technical requirements such as ultra-high pressure and supercritical fluid
Detector types 9 types Expanded to 21 types (CAD, HRMS, etc. added) Meet high-level detection needs such as trace analysis and structural identification

Analysis of key instrument terms

Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph (4.1.1.2) definition updated to: Stationary phase particle size <2μm, pressure resistance >50MPa, reflecting the development of submicron filler technology. A new Charged Aerosol Detector (4.11.10) is added for non-volatile compound detection.

The new multidimensional chromatograph (4.1.1.7) emphasizes the combination technology and realizes the separation of complex samples by combining two or more chromatographic columns.

Chromatographic parameter calculation specifications

Resolution degree (6.19) is calculated as follows:

R=2×(tR(2)-tR(1))/(w1+w2)

The newly added asymmetry factor (6.21) quantifies the peak shape: As=(a+b)/2a, and requires the standard peak As to be controlled within 0.9-1.2.

Implementation suggestions

  1. English abbreviations defined in the new version (such as HILIC) should be used first when developing methods
  2. The validation report must indicate the full name of the detector used and the corresponding clause number (such as 4.11.9.1 High-resolution mass spectrometer detector)
  3. The gradient elution procedure should refer to the description of clause 7.21.2

Technology evolution analysis

The standard reflects three major trends: ① miniaturization (UHPLC particle size requirements), ② hyphenation (LC-MS included in the terminology), and ③ intelligence (programmed flow rate control). The newly added terms such as pre-column filter (4.8.1) reflect the improvement of instrument protection awareness.
