Scope
1.1 This standard specifies the method for measuring the volatility of engine oil using capillary gas chromatography. 1.2 This standard is applicable to the determination of the volatility of engine oil at 371°C. This standard is also applicable to the determination of oil volatility at any temperature point between 126°C and 371°C. This standard is applicable when the initial boiling point of the sample is higher than 126°C or the boiling point of the first calibration component is lower than the initial boiling point of the sample, and the final boiling point is lower than 615°C or the last n-alkane in the calibration mixture has a higher boiling point Lubricating base oil sample at the final boiling point of the sample. By using certain instruments and columns it is possible to extend the applicability of the method. 1.3 This standard adopts the principle of simulated dis illation method. 1.4 This standard can be used for lubricating base oils and finis ed lubricating oils containing complex additives. These additive packages usually contain high molecular weight non-volatile components that cannot elute from the column under the experimental conditions of this method. In the calculation formula used in this method, it is assumed that all components in the sample can elute from the column and be detected with the same response factor. However, this assumption does not hold true if non-volatile additives are present in the sample. At this time, the results obtained will have a large deviation compared with the SH/T 0695 determination method that uses an internal standard to determine non-eluted substances. Therefore, this method directly expresses the volatility by the area percentage of the sample. 1.5 This standard uses the International System of Units (SI) units. 1.6 This standard does not make recommendations on all safety is ues involved. Therefore, before using this standard, users should establis appropriate safety and protection measures and develop corresponding management systems.
