Scope
1.1 This standard specifies methods for the determination of various volatile sulfur compounds in light petroleum fractions. This standard applies to petroleum dis illates, automotive gasoline (including gasoline containing oxygenated compounds) and other petroleum fractions with a final boiling point not greater than 230°C under normal pressure. The measurable mass fraction range of this standard varies depending on the sample type and the instrument used; in most cases, this standard is suitable for the determination of samples with a sulfur mass fraction of a single sulfur-containing compound between 0.1 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg. 1.2 This standard is not intended to characterize all monomeric sulfur-containing compounds. Within the measurement range specified by the method, the detector should respond linearly to sulfur and all monomeric sulfur-containing compounds should have an equimolar response to sulfur. It can perform quantitative determination of both uncharacterized and characterized monomeric sulfur-containing compounds. However, the mass fractions of many reactive sulfur-containing compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, will change during the sampling and analysis process. The total sulfur mass fraction of a sample can be estimated by accumulating the measured sulfur mass fractions of individual sulfur-containing compounds, but this standard is not the preferred method for determining the total sulfur mass fraction. 1.3 This standard uses International System of Units (SI) units. 1.4 This standard does not purport to mention certain hazardous materials, operations, equipment and all safety is ues related thereto. Therefore, users should establis appropriate safety and protective measures and ensure an operational management system before using the standards.
