Introduction

Technical Analysis of the Quarantine and Identification Standard for Trogoderma anthrenoides

This standard (SN/T4725-2016) was issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China. It standardizes the quarantine and identification process for the Mexican trogoderma beetle (Trogoderma anthrenoides) and is applicable to inbound and outbound plant quarantine.

Comparison of core identification features

Characteristic dimensions Adult identification points Larva identification points
Antennal structure The 3rd to 10th segments of the male antennal club are serrated, while the last 4 segments of the female form an antennal club The bristles on the first antennal segment are concentrated on one side, and the second segment has no bristles
Elytra characteristics The subbasal band ring is connected to the submedian band by a longitudinal band, and the length of the submedian band is ≤1/2 of the wing width The dorsal plate of the 8th abdominal segment has a distinct anterior ridge groove
Microstructure The lateral processes of the male penis are narrow and parallel, and the penis bridge is transverse The distal segment of the arrow setae and the midaxis of the second distal segment are simple and have no accessory structures

Laboratory testing technical specifications

Four-step testing process:

  1. Surface inspection: Collect insect bodies and molts from the surface of the victim
  2. Sieving test: Use a round-hole sieve to separate the sieve contents (recommended pore size ≤2mm)
  3. Feeding test: Cultivate suspicious samples at 28-30℃
  4. Microscopic identification: Focus on observing the structure of the male external genitalia and the upper inner lip of the larva

Key reagents: 10% sodium hydroxide solution for dissection, He Yan'er sealing solution for slide preparation

Key points for distinguishing closely related species

Main differences from T. ornatum and T. sternale:

  • Dispersion characteristics of white tufts on elytra
  • Length ratio of of the last second segment of larvae (twice as long as that of the last third segment)
  • Nearly equal width of the third and fourth antennal segments of males

Suggestions for the implementation of the standard

Handling Precautions:

  • Larvae specimens need to be preserved in ethanol-glycerol solution (3:1 ratio)
  • Molecular detection samples should be frozen at -20℃
  • Regularly check the microscopic characteristics in Appendix BD

Risk Prevention and Control: This insect can be spread over long distances through hosts such as dried chili peppers and grains, so quarantine at the place of origin needs to be strengthened
