Introduction

Background and evolution of standard technology

As an important supplement to traditional tensile testing, the development of indentation testing technology can be traced back to the instrumented indentation research in the 1990s. Compared with the conventional tensile test specified in GB/T228.1, the outstanding advantages of this standard are:

Comparison dimensions Indentation method (SN/T5684) Traditional tensile method (GB/T228.1)
Specimen requirements 40×40mm plane is sufficient Standard tensile specimen required
Detection efficiency Single point 3-5 minutes More than 30 minutes
Destructiveness Micro-damage detection Complete destruction

Analysis of core test principles

The stress-strain curve reconstruction based on the Hollomon model is the technical core of this standard, and its mathematical expression is a piecewise function:

σ = { EIε (σ≤σy)
{ EINσy1-NεN (σ>σy)

Key parameter acquisition path:

  1. Elastic modulus EI: determined by the slope of the unloading curve
  2. Yield stress σy: analyze the inflection point of the loading section
  3. Hardening exponent N: fit the plastic section curve

Technical requirements for key equipment

The indentation testing machine required by the standard must meet the following requirements:

  • Displacement resolution ≤ 10nm
  • Force accuracy ±0.5%FS
  • The indenter diameter is preferably 1.0mm (steel) or 1.5875mm (aluminum)

A standard reference block must be used for daily inspection. It is recommended to use a Rockwell hardness block HRC60±2 to verify the equipment status.

Typical application cases

Case: Rapid acceptance of imported 304 stainless steel plates

A batch of 304 stainless steel plates was tested by the indentation method, and the results were:

  • RmI = 515MPa (standard requirement ≥515MPa)
  • RyI = 205MPa (standard requirement ≥205MPa)

The deviation from the traditional tensile test result is <3%, saving 75% of the testing time.

Implementation Suggestions

  1. Sample Preparation: Surface roughness needs to be controlled at Ra≤0.8μm, and diamond polishing paste is recommended
  2. Parameter Optimization: For high-strength steel, a loading rate of 2μm/s is recommended
  3. Result Verification: When used for the first time, a comparative test should be conducted with the traditional tensile method
  4. Quality Control: Establish a daily first-piece verification system
