Scope

This standard covers safety considerations when making hot taps on in-service piping or equipment, or when performing welding operations without hot taps. Before each job begins, a detailed, written procedure for hot tapping and welding should be prepared to ensure that the steps taken are appropriate. Revisions to these procedures may be required when special issues and situations arise that may affect the safety of personnel and equipment. The hot tapping and welding procedures described in this standard are applicable to piping and equipment manufactured from low alloy steels and austenitic steels. Other materials, such as aluminum, copper, plastic and cast steel, may require special hot tapping or welding procedures.
