Scope

This standard applies to the manufacture of steel pipes for conveying natural gas, water, and oil in the petroleum and natural gas industries.
This standard includes seamless welded line pipe with outer diameters ranging from 12.7 mm to 168.3 mm (0.5 in to 6-3/4 in). Welded butt joints made outside of the manufacturing plant are not within the scope of this standard.
The steel grades covered by this standard include X52C, X56C, X60C, X65C, X70C, X80C and X90C. The grade of continuous line pipe in single or individual coil form should be a single grade only.
Without the purchaser's consent, steel pipes with grades no less than X60C shall not be used to replace those with grade X52C.
Although seamless welded line pipes meeting this standard are suitable for field welding, the manufacturer is not responsible for field welding.
The dimensions specified in this standard refer to pipe outer diameters. For pipe with an outside diameter of 60.3 mm (2-3/8 in) or more, U.S. customary units are expressed as whole numbers and fractions; for pipe with an outside diameter less than 60.3 mm (2-3/8 in), U.S. customary units retain to the third decimal place.
This standard uses International System of Units (metric) values, and corresponding U.S. customary units (USCS) are given in parentheses in text descriptions and many tables; for numerical rounding rules and conversion factors, see Appendix H.
This standard does not include suitability of steel pipes for environments containing hydrogen sulfide.
