Introduction
Background of Standard Revision and Technological Evolution
GB/T14455.1-2021, as the basic part of the spice standard system, was first published in 1993. This revision is synchronized with the ISO3218:2014 international standard, reflecting three major directions of technological evolution:
- Terminology standardization: uniformly adopt the prefix "Essential oil of" to distinguish it from fatty oil
- Traceability refinement: strengthen the labeling requirements for plant parts, chemical types, and geographical origins
- International coordination: fully connect with ISO4720 botanical naming rules
Analysis of core naming principles
| Element type | Labeling requirements | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Botanical origin | Genus name + species name, ISO4720 naming is preferred | Lavandula angustifolia Mill. |
| Plant parts | Flower, leaf, fruit and other extraction parts must be indicated | Essential oil of clove leaf |
| Chemical type | Main ingredient differences must be marked with chemical type | basil, methylchavicol type |
Comparison of key technologies of the new and old standards
Compared with the 2008 version, the main changes in the 2021 version are:
- Term deletion: Delete the repeatedly defined "essential oil" term
- Geographical indication: Improve the naming rules for the same varieties in different production areas (newly added Article 4.10)
- Botanical scope: Expand the naming standards for hybrids and asexual propagation lines
Implementation suggestions and precautions
Labeling practice: It is recommended to adopt the "four-element labeling method":
Basic name (Essential oil of) +
Botanical name/common name+
Part/chemical type+
Geographical origin/processing technology
Special attention for international trade: Export products must comply with the naming requirements of ISO4720:2018. For example, Spanish rosemary essential oil should be labeled as: Essential oil of rosemary, Spain type
