Background of Standard Revision and Analysis of Technical Evolution

GB/T 14906-2018 "Viscosity Classification of Internal Combustion Engine Oils" replaces the previous GB/T 14906-1994 version, and is mainly revised to meet the higher requirements of modern engines for lubricant performance. The new standard introduces more stringent low-temperature starting and pumping performance test methods, and adds viscosity test items under high temperature and high shear conditions.

Classification method and brand representation

The new standard adopts two groups of viscosity grade series, with and without the letter W. Single-grade oil is divided into low-temperature starting viscosity, low-temperature pumping viscosity and 100℃ kinematic viscosity, and multi-grade oil must meet both W-grade low-temperature performance and non-W-grade high-temperature shear performance.


Implementation Suggestions

1. When selecting lubricating oil, it is necessary to select the appropriate viscosity grade according to the engine's operating environment and working conditions. For example, multi-grade oil with low W grade should be preferred in extremely cold areas.

2. Use GB/T 6538 to test low-temperature starting viscosity and boundary pumping temperature to ensure the performance of lubricating oil under extreme conditions.

3. For high temperature and high shear conditions, it is recommended to use SH/T 0751 method to meet the needs of high-performance engines.
