Standard Background and Technology Evolution Analysis
This standard is an important normative document in the field of porous ceramics. Since its first release in 1980, it has been revised in 1996 and 2024. This revision mainly optimizes and improves the term definitions, test methods and test conditions.

Core Terminology Explanation and Practical Application
1. Apparent Porosity
Apparent porosity refers to the volume of open pores in a porous ceramic sample as a percentage of the total volume of the sample. In practical applications, if the sample reacts with water, other immersion liquids (such as kerosene) need to be selected. For example, when testing a ceramic filter element with a microporous structure, the apparent porosity is a key indicator for evaluating its filtration performance.
2. Bulk Density
Bulk density is the dry mass of a sample per unit volume, usually expressed in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³). In actual production, bulk density is closely related to the mechanical strength of ceramic materials.
Instruments and operating specifications
- Vacuum device:Can reduce the absolute pressure in the container to no more than 2500Pa to ensure test accuracy.
- Immersion liquid selection:Generally distilled water, kerosene or other organic liquids can be used in special cases.
Implementation suggestions
In actual operation, it is recommended to:
- Prepare samples strictly in accordance with standard requirements to ensure that the number and size of samples meet the specifications.
- Optimize test environment conditions (such as temperature control) and reduce external interference factors.
- Strengthen personnel training, especially the mastery of the vacuum method operation process.
