Scope

This standard expounds the principles and framework of life cycle assessment (LCA), including: a) Determination of purpose and scope of LCA; b) Phase of life cycle inventory analysis (LCI); c) Phase of life cycle impact assessment (LCIA); d) e) reporting and critical review of the LCA; f) limitations of the LCA; g) relationships among the stages of the LCA; h) conditions for value selection and application of optional elements. This standard covers life cycle assessment (LCA) studies and life cycle inventory (LCI) studies, but does not detail LCA techniques, nor does it specify the methodology for each stage of LCA. The application of LCA and LCI results should be considered when defining the purpose and scope, but the application itself is outside the scope of this standard. This standard is not intended to be used in contracts, regulations, registration and certification, etc.
