Scope

This standard specifies the method for determining the molecular weight distribution, number average molecular weight Mn and weight average molecular weight Mw of polymers dissolved in THF (tetrahydrofuran) by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Even though good reproducibility can be obtained with this method, the method cannot be used for certain polymers where special interactions occur, such as adsorption between the sample/eluent/column system. This method is not an absolute determination method, it needs to be calibrated with a commercially available unbranched polystyrene standard substance, and the molecular weight of this standard substance has been measured by an absolute method. Therefore, except for polystyrene, the determination results of polymer samples should only be used for comparison between groups of samples of the same type. The conditions specified in this standard are not applicable to the analysis of polymer samples with Mw value greater than 106 by GPC (see Appendix C). There are no correction methods in this standard, such as eliminating peak broadening. If you want to get the absolute molecular weight value, you need to use absolute method to measure, such as Mn by membrane permeation method or Mw by light scattering method.
