Scope

This standard gives recommended methods for collecting representative samples of pipeline crude oil and liquid petroleum products by automated means. This standard does not apply to sampling of liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas. The primary purpose of this standard is to provide guidance for the specification, testing, operation, maintenance, and monitoring of crude oil samplers. The crude oil sampling operation provides representative samples for the determination of the following items: a) crude oil composition and quality; b) total water content; c) other impurities that cannot be used as components of the transported crude oil. If the sampling operations for determining a), b) and c) conflict with each other, separate sampling may be required. This standard covers sample handling, covering all aspects of transferring collected samples to laboratory equipment. This International Standard describes sampling methods and practices that are believed to be the most representative samples currently possible and thus allow accurate determination of water content. However, the accuracy of water content determination of in-line samples collected by an autosampler depends not only on the configuration and characteristics of the various components that make up the sampling system, but also on the accuracy of subsequent analysis methods. Chapter 16 presents theoretical methods for evaluating the total uncertainty of automated sampling systems and analytical tests. Chapter 15 describes practical test procedures for use in the field. The parties involved should usually reach an agreement specifying the permissible range of accuracy for a particular automatic sampling system. In Table 4 in Chapter 15, the performance of automatic sampling systems is classified according to the accuracy index of the actual test results. These indicators serve as a reference for qualifying performance and as the basis for individual agreements.
