Scope

The purpose of this standard is to facilitate the selection of image scanners by users for their respective requirements. This standard specifies the basic content that a manufacturer should include in a scanner specification sheet. This standard applies to general end users. It is for this reason that this standard does not specify all the specifications of scanners with special features such as double-sided scanning or high-speed scanners. In order to ensure the consistency of scanner product information (content) specifications, this standard enables end users to specify the functions of the machine. Make meaningful comparisons with performance characteristics. This standard also stipulates and lists the most meaningful functions and performance parameters, and provides performance measurement. This standard also applies to the most popular types of scanners in use today, including the scan engine (optomechanical physical device) and basic image processing (the halftone signal). It does not require specifications for advanced application processing such as OCR, text translation, and vector transformation. Although this standard primarily specifies scanner hardware, since scanners use software and/or hardware to implement some scanner functions and controls, this standard also includes some software-related clauses. The manufacturer reserves the right to add to the specification sheet a description of some additional features that may be provided. This standard neither considers image quality nor provides or uses related test versions.
