Scope

This standard defines the method of cataloging feature types, specifies how to organize feature types into feature catalogs, and how to provide them to users of geographic data. This standard applies to the establishment of catalogs for previously uncatalogued feature types, and may also revise existing feature catalogs in accordance with the provisions of this standard. This International Standard applies to catalogs of feature types represented in numerical form. Its principles can also be extended to the cataloging of other forms of geographic data. The feature catalog has nothing to do with the feature concept dictionary defined in ISO 19126, and it can be cataloged without using or establishing a feature concept dictionary. This standard can be used to define geographic features at the type level, but not to represent individual instances of each feature type. This standard does not involve the graphical representation mode defined in GB/T 24355-2009. This standard can be used as a basis for defining the domain of discourse in the modeling of a specific application, or in the modeling of more than one application, to standardize the general characteristics of real-world elements.
