Introduction
Analysis of the core content of the standard
GB/T28963-2020, as the core standard for ship kitchen fire safety, mainly regulates:
- Materials, performance and installation requirements for fire extinguishing system components
- Fire extinguishing test methods for 21 types of cooking equipment such as deep fat fryers and ovens
- Standardized process for full-scale fire extinguishing test of smoke exhaust systems
- Technical consistency with ISO15371:2015 international standard
Comparison of key technology evolution
| Technical elements | 2012 edition | 2020 edition |
|---|---|---|
| Definition of terms | Definition of steamer is not included | 12 new terms such as steamer are added |
| System release time | No clear quantitative requirements | It is required to control the scale of the fireball within 10 seconds |
| Mechanical starting device | No exception clause | Added exception of backup power supply monitoring |
Key requirements for system components
The standard puts forward strict requirements for the core components of the fire extinguishing system:
- Nozzle: must be made of brass/stainless steel, equipped with anti-clogging filter, and can withstand high temperature without deformation
- Detector: must be certified and work reliably in an environment of 0-49℃
- Manual device: operating force ≤178N, displacement ≤356mm, identification height ≥6mm
- Fire extinguishing agent: it is strictly forbidden to mix products from different manufacturers, and compatibility must be clearly defined
Typical application case: the kitchen of a ro-ro ship uses a separate tank deep fat fryer that complies with the provisions of 5.1.2.1. The fire extinguishing system has passed the 5.2.1 splash test and the height of the nozzle from the oil surface is strictly controlled within the range of 230-300mm.
Implementation suggestions
Key implementation points based on standard requirements:
- Design phase: The coverage area limit in the manufacturer's manual must be checked according to Clause 4.3.1
- Installation phase: The inclination of the smoke exhaust duct shall meet the 25.4-76.2mm/m specified in 5.3.4.5
- Acceptance test: The 4 fire extinguishing performance verifications specified in 5.1.1.2 must be performed
- Maintenance management: 10 mandatory inspections must be carried out every year according to Clause 6.2n)
Special note: According to Clause 4.9.4, all fuel sources sharing the exhaust duct must be shut down in a linked manner.
