Interpretation of the core content of the standard


Scope of application and definition of terms

This standard applies to the speed/power trial of displacement ships and specifies the complete process from trial preparation to result reporting. Key terms include:

  • Contract speed: ship speed specified in the new construction/construction contract
  • EEDI speed: load state under the energy efficiency design index verification conditions specified by IMO
  • Round trip: consecutive voyages with the same power in opposite headings

Key correction method

Direct power method process

  1. Measured speed (VG) corrected by iteration method/average method
  2. Calculate the total resistance increase ΔR=RAA+RAW+RAS
  3. Correct the propulsion efficiency using load factors (ξPnV)
  4. Convert to contractual status through power ratio αP

Example: The shaft power of a bulk carrier was measured to be 14,500kW during sea trial. After wind and wave correction, the ideal power is 13,820kW. The speed correction value ΔV=0.12kn.


Implementation points

  • DGPS positioning accuracy needs to reach differential mode
  • torque measurement system deviation needs to be <1%
  • hull/propeller cleaning inspection is required before sea trial
  • sister ship can be simplified to 3 round trips
