1. Background of Standard Formulation

As a local specialty poultry breed in China, Camellia Chicken has attracted much attention for its unique appearance and excellent production performance. In order to protect and promote this valuable local resource, the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China took the lead in drafting the national standard GB/T 32750—2016 Camellia Chicken. The standard is managed by the National Technical Committee for Animal Husbandry Standardization and was officially released in 2016.

The formulation of the standard is based on many considerations, including the genetic characteristics, production performance and market value of Camellia Chicken. Through scientific research and data accumulation, this authoritative and practical national standard was finally formed.

2. Characteristics of Camellia Chicken

Camellia Chicken originated in Dehong, Xishuangbanna, Honghe, Wenshan and Lincang Autonomous Prefectures of Yunnan Province. It is a local breed for both egg and meat. Its notable characteristics include:

• Small and compact body, feathers close together
• Small and delicate head, roosters have a single or bean comb, the comb is large and red
• Bill is black, ear lobes and wattles are red
• Tibia and toes are mostly black or yellow
• Iris is yellow, some are brown or gray

The feather color of roosters and hens is significantly different, and the down of chicks is mainly brown.

3. Analysis of Reproductive Performance

The reproductive performance of Camellia Chicken is one of its important values, which is specifically reflected in:

• Number of eggs laid per day at 72 weeks of age/eggs: 90~130
• Average egg weight/g: 37~41
