Scope

This part of GB/T 3358 defines applied statistical terms and expresses them with concepts consistent with ISO terminology specification practices. Terminology entries are organized by topic. This section specifies the standard symbols and abbreviations of terms, and also provides Chinese and English indexes. It is well known that the use of applied statistics as a means of improving organizational efficiency and effectiveness has been hampered by the complexity and confusion caused by non-uniform names and uses of terminology, definitions, symbols and acronyms. The purpose of this part is mainly twofold: the specific purpose is to establish a common vocabulary for the use of all statistical method application standards; the further purpose is to enhance the accuracy, clarity and consistency in the use of applied statistics. The level of mathematics in this section has been deliberately kept at a relatively low level in order to make the content easily accessible to a wider range of potential readers. GB/T 3358.1 and GB/T 3358.2 are compatible. However, since GB/T 3358.1 is about the basic terms in probability and statistics, it is necessary to use a slightly stricter and more complicated mathematical language than GB/T 3358.2 to express. Users of this section may sometimes refer to some terms in GB/T 3358.1. The abundant notes and examples in GB/T 3358.1 provide popular explanations for formal terms.
