Interpretation of the core content of the standard
As the standard for key components of lightning protection systems, GB/T33588.3-2020 puts forward systematic technical requirements for isolation discharge gap (ISG). The main updates of this standard that replaces the 2017 version include:

Key technical requirements
1. Grading system
ISG is divided into five levels: H/N/1L/2L/3L according to its lightning current carrying capacity. For specific parameters, see standard Table 1:
Typical application case: A substation uses H-level ISG (100kA peak current) as the isolation protection between the main grounding grid and the secondary system. After 3 years of operation, it has been verified to meet the design requirements.
2. Electrical performance indicators
- Insulation resistance: ≥500kΩ before and after the test
- Impulse discharge voltage: tested under 1.2/50μs waveform
- Withstand voltage: including power frequency/DC types
Implementation points
1. Test process optimization
The new version of the standard requires the test flow chart in Appendix A to be followed, with special emphasis on:
- Salt spray test (GB/T2423.18) must be completed in the pretreatment stage
- Outdoor ISG must pass 1000 hours xenon lamp aging test
2. Selection suggestions
Select the corresponding category according to the installation environment:
- Indoor type: focus on insulation performance
- Outdoor type: must meet both UV resistance and IP protection requirements
