Background of Standard Formulation

With the intensification of global climate change, the impact of extreme low temperature and cooling events on agriculture, ecology and human life is becoming increasingly significant. GB/T 34293—2017 "Monitoring Indicators for Extreme Low Temperature and Cooling" aims to provide unified technical specifications for scientific assessment and response to these extreme meteorological events.

1. Determination method of extreme threshold

The standard uses the percentile method to determine the extreme threshold:

  • Low temperature extreme threshold: Take the minimum and second minimum values of the daily minimum temperature during the climate standard period, sort and take the 5th percentile.
  • Daily temperature drop extreme threshold: Take the maximum daily temperature drop in the year, sort and take the 95th percentile.
  • Continuous temperature drop extreme threshold: Take the maximum continuous temperature drop in the year, sort and take the 95th percentile.
