Introduction

National Standard of the People's Republic of China GB/T 34755—2017 Technical Specifications for Production and Management of Family Pastures

Dimensions Infrastructure Construction Forage Supply and Demand Management Livestock Production Records Economic Benefit Calculation
Key Requirements
  • Design livestock sheds in accordance with NY/T 682.
  • Establish appropriate forage storage facilities, refer to NY/T 1177.
  • Determine the amount of forage according to the area of grassland (Table A.1).
  • Calculate the time for supplementary feeding to ensure the nutritional needs of livestock.
  • Establish detailed production files (Table A.3).
  • Monitor the growth indicators of females and young animals (Table A.4, Table A.5).
  • Calculate total income Y, refer to formula (3).
  • Determine total cost E, based on depreciation of fixed assets and purchase costs of fodder.

Explanation of professional terms and practical application cases

Sheep unit: Based on adult female sheep, the daily feed intake of one sheep unit is 1.8 kg of standard hay with a moisture content of 14%. This indicator is widely used in the calculation of forage supply and demand, as shown in formulas (1) and (2):

T_s = T_fs / (SU × D_i)

Where: T_s is the refeeding time (days), T_fs is the total amount of forage (kg), SU is the number of sheep units, and D_i is the daily feed intake (kg/sheep day).

For example: A family ranch has 100 sheep units and needs to calculate the refeeding time during the non-grazing season. Assuming that 5000kg of forage is purchased and it is planned to provide 1.8kg of standard hay every day, according to the formula: T_s = (5000) / (100 × 1.8) ≈ 27.78 days, it takes about 28 days.

Implementation suggestions

Optimize the herd structure: Adjust the breeding scale according to seasonal changes and forage reserves. For example, before winter arrives, the number of surplus livestock to be sold is determined based on the quantity and quality of purchased forage recorded in Table A.1.

Economic benefit maximization: By rationally allocating livestock types and proportions (e.g., 60-80% of the basic ewes in the sheep herd and 50-70% of the basic cows in the cattle herd), combined with market price fluctuations, the best time to sell is selected to maximize profits.

Technical application: The zoning rotational grazing method specified in NY/T 1343 is used to protect grassland resources while increasing grassland production. During implementation, a detailed feeding plan should be formulated with reference to Table A.2, and the feeding strategy should be adjusted in a timely manner based on livestock monitoring records (such as Table A.4).

Summary

GB/T 34755—2017 provides comprehensive technical guidance for family ranches, and detailed planning is required for all aspects from infrastructure to economic benefits. Through scientific management, reasonable adjustment of herd structure, and optimization of forage supply and demand, production efficiency and economic benefits can be effectively improved.
