Introduction
1. Background and significance of standard formulation
Pepper is one of the important solanaceous vegetables in my country, and faces a serious threat of cold damage during winter and spring planting in southern China. This standard was created to regulate the monitoring, early warning and assessment of cold damage to pepper.
| Dimensions | Standard features | Application value |
|---|---|---|
| Grade division | Four-level division: mild, moderate, severe and extremely severe cold damage | Convenient for disaster classification and loss assessment |
| Indicator system | Taking the minimum temperature of the process as the main factor, and the number of days meeting the standard and the total number of days as auxiliary | Scientifically quantify the degree of cold damage |
| Scope of application | Pepper planting in winter and spring in South China | Highly targeted and practical |
2. Classification and indicators of chilling damage to pepper
The standard divides chilling damage to pepper in the seedling stage and flowering and fruiting stage into four levels. The specific symptoms and critical temperatures are shown in Table 1 and Table 2.
| Grade | Symptoms in the seedling stage | Symptoms in the flowering and fruiting stage | Critical temperature (℃) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 (mild) | Growth stops, some leaves are dehydrated, but not withered | Increase in short-style flowers, and decrease in fruit setting rate | 7≤tmin<10 |
| Level 2 (moderate) | Most leaves are dehydrated, a few are withered | Buds wilt or dry up, and fruit grows slowly | 5≤tmin<7 |
| Grade 3 (Severe) | Most leaves are dehydrated and dried | Flower and fruit drop are common, and leaf death is serious | 3≤tmin<5 | Grade 4 (Extremely Severe) | Partial or major death of the plant | Fruit discoloration, leaf drop, and plant death | tmin<3 |
3. Suggestions for the implementation of the standard
To ensure the effective implementation of the standard, it is recommended to take the following measures:
- Establish a regional meteorological monitoring network to track the cold damage process in real time
- Carry out farmer training to popularize the method for determining the grade of chilling damage to pepper
- Combined with agricultural insurance, formulate a graded compensation mechanism
- Promote the coordinated implementation of the standard and relevant policies
