Introduction

National Standard of the People's Republic of China GB/T 35238—2017

In-depth Interpretation of Technical Specifications for the Prevention and Control of Wheat Stripe Rust

Background and Significance of Standard Formulation

Wheat stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis West.) is a quarantine disease that seriously affects wheat yields. It has a wide epidemic area, spreads quickly, and causes huge economic losses. In order to standardize prevention and control technologies and ensure food security, the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China organized the drafting of the "Technical Specifications for the Prevention and Control of Wheat Stripe Rust" (GB/T 35238—2017), which was promulgated and implemented in 2017.

The standard combines domestic and foreign research results and practical experience, focusing on clarifying term definitions, epidemic zoning, comprehensive prevention and control strategies and main prevention and control technologies, providing an important basis for the scientific prevention and control of wheat stripe rust.

Standard Dimensions Content Overview Specific Requirements Implementation Suggestions
Term Definitions Key concepts such as the degree of disease, disease resistance and control indicators of wheat stripe rust are clarified. - Disease degree: expressed by diseased leaf rate, severity and disease index.
- Disease resistance: divided into 6 levels such as immune and near-immune, and further subdivided according to growth period and temperature conditions.
- Control indicators: the degree of disease that achieves the best economic benefits.
It is recommended to combine disease resistance monitoring and control indicators in actual prevention and control, and reasonably choose the timing and measures of prevention and control.
Epidemic zoning According to climate conditions, distribution of fungal sources and disease characteristics, the wheat stripe rust occurrence areas are divided into five types: summering area, winter-breeding area, common occurrence area, prone occurrence area and occasional occurrence area. - Summering area: The temperature is low in summer and wheat planting is scattered.
- Winter-breeding area: The fungal source is easy to spread in autumn and the winter is warm and humid.
- Common occurrence area: The climate is humid and the disease occurs frequently throughout the year.
- Prone occurrence area: The autumn seedlings are prone to the disease and the winter and spring are dry.
- Occasional occurrence area: The source of pathogens is scarce and the disease may occur in extreme weather.
According to the characteristics of different regions, differentiated prevention and control strategies are implemented, focusing on the control of summering fungal source bases and common occurrence areas.
Comprehensive prevention and control strategy Adopt the comprehensive management concept of "planting disease-resistant varieties as the main method, and pesticide control and cultivation measures as the auxiliary method". - Promote wheat varieties resistant to stripe rust throughout the growth period.
- Implement returning farmland to forest and adjusting crop structure in the summer fungus source base.
- Strengthen seed treatment and field monitoring.
It is recommended that local areas reasonably arrange disease-resistant varieties and optimize pesticide use plans in light of actual conditions to ensure prevention and control effects.

Interpretation of main prevention and control technologies

1. Selection and rational use of disease-resistant varieties

Selection of disease-resistant varieties is the basis for prevention and control of wheat stripe rust. The standard clearly requires the selection of disease-resistant varieties that have been identified and approved by the national or provincial crop variety approval committee, and reasonable layout according to regional characteristics:

  • Plant wheat varieties with different disease-resistant genes in the summer fungus source base and Pingchuan area.
  • Promote varieties with disease resistance in adult stage and high temperature resistance in prone and occasional areas.
  • Regularly monitor the changes in disease resistance of wheat production varieties and eliminate susceptible varieties in time.

2. Seed treatment technology

In the source area of stripe rust and the frequent outbreak area, if the seedling susceptible varieties are planted, fungicide seed dressing or seed coating should be implemented. Commonly used agents include:

  • Triadimefon: The amount of active ingredient is 0.03% of the dry seed volume.
  • Diniconazole: Same as above.
  • Other pesticides such as propiconazole and hexaconazole can also be used for seed dressing or coating.

3. Field application technology

According to the control indicators of different regions and growth periods, choose appropriate pesticides for spray control:

  • Common pesticides include triadimefon, diniconazole, propiconazole, etc.
  • The amount of water varies according to the dosage form: generally 50-60kg or 10kg (low-volume spray).
  • Apply the pesticide up to 2 times per growing season, and use it strictly in accordance with GB/T 8321.1.

Implementation Suggestions

Combining the content of the standard with actual needs, the following implementation suggestions are proposed:

  • Strengthen inter-regional cooperation and establish a long-term monitoring mechanism.
  • While promoting disease-resistant varieties, pay attention to the matching use of cultivation technology.
  • Rationally adjust the order of pesticide use to avoid the development of drug resistance.
  • Develop differentiated prevention and control plans based on the characteristics of different regions.
