Introduction
National Standard of the People's Republic of China GB/T 35380—2017
Method for Determining Waste Materials in Imported Logs
Background and Significance of the Standard
GB/T 35380—2017 "Method for Determining Waste Materials in Imported Logs" is an important standard in the field of wood inspection and quarantine in my country, which aims to standardize the quality control and determination process of imported logs. The standard was proposed by the State Forestry Administration and managed by the National Technical Committee for Timber Standardization, providing an important basis for ensuring the quality and ecological safety of imported wood in my country.
Background of Formulation
With the rapid development of my country's international wood trade, the number and types of imported logs have increased significantly. However, due to the influence of transportation, storage and natural factors, the proportion of waste materials in imported logs has also increased year by year. This standard was created to unify the criteria, standardize the inspection and quarantine process, and avoid ecological risks and economic losses caused by substandard quality.
Terms and Definitions
| Terms | Definitions |
|---|---|
| culled logs; rejected logs | Logs with defects such as decay and cavities exceeding a certain limit and basically no use value. |
| tederohole | A hole formed by logs invaded by tederos, woodlice, marine boring animals, etc. |
| Stained by decay fungi | Staining caused by wood decay fungi in the early stage of wood invasion. Common colors include red spots, light reddish brown, etc. |
| Cubic rot | The rotten part is in the shape of a wheel or square. |
Inspection items and determination methods
The standard stipulates 12 main inspection items for the determination of imported log waste, covering decay, cavities, insect damage, cracks and other aspects. The following are detailed descriptions of some key items:
Determination of Decay and Cavity
| Item | Determination Criteria | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Root rot or cavity | The diameter exceeds 1/3 | Such defects directly affect the use value of the wood and need to be strictly controlled. |
| Heartwood rot or cavity runs through the entire length of the wood | - | The rotten part runs through the entire length of the wood, which is a serious defect. |
| Blocky decay (ring-shaped) | Appears simultaneously in the core and outer areas, and exceeds 2/4 of the wood surface | A comprehensive judgment is required in combination with the end face and the cross section. |
Actual application case
Based on the example pictures in Figures A.1 to A.68, combined with actual inspection scenarios:
- Root rot (white rot fungi): As shown in Figure A.1, an obvious white discoloration area appears on the surface of the wood and extends to the inside.
- Combination of cavities and partial decay: As shown in Figures A.9 and A.10, the wood has both root rot and partial decay, and the length of the partial decay exceeds 1/2 of the wood length.
- Fruiting body decay: As shown in Figures A.19 to A.21, large bacterial structures appear on the wood surface, and the coverage area exceeds 40% of the wood surface.
Implementation suggestions
To ensure the effective implementation of the standard, the following suggestions are put forward:
- Training and publicity: Regularly organize inspection and quarantine personnel to conduct standard interpretation and practical training.
- Equipment update: Equipped with advanced wood defect detection equipment to improve inspection efficiency and accuracy.
- International cooperation: Establish an information sharing mechanism with major wood exporting countries to jointly deal with wood quality issues.
