1. Standard Background and Technical Evolution

GB/T 35649-2017 "Emergency Mapping Symbol Specifications for Emergencies" is China's first standardization document for emergency management of emergencies, aiming to unify and standardize the design, use and management of emergency mapping symbols for emergencies. This standard is based on the geographic information public platform and thematic mapping technology, combined with domestic and foreign practical experience, and fills the gap in the field of emergency mapping symbols for emergencies in China.

3. Interpretation of core content

3.1 Symbol classification and coding rules

Symbol classification:There are three geometric forms: point, line, and surface, which correspond to different application scenarios. For example, point marking symbols are used to indicate the location of emergencies, line symbols are used to indicate isolation areas or routes of action, and surface symbols are used to indicate warning areas.

Coding rules:A 6-digit code hierarchical coding system is used, including major categories (1 letter), medium categories (1 digit), minor categories (2 digits) and subcategories (2 digits). For example, the code for flood events is A10101, where A represents emergencies, 1 represents natural disasters, 01 represents water and drought disasters, and 01 represents floods.


3.2 Symbol style design

Point-shaped plotting symbols: consist of an outer frame, a symbol body, and a logo text. The outer frame is divided into a rounded square (emergency) and a right-angled square (hazard source, protection target, emergency support resource). For example, the outer frame of the hazard source symbol is a right-angled square, and the interior contains a specific hazard type logo.

Line-shaped plotting symbols: consist of a line body and auxiliary elements, and are used to represent isolation lines, roads, and infrastructure. For example, the communication optical cable line symbol is designed with a solid line plus an arrow, and the color is uniformly red (R:255, G:0, B:0).

Plane-shaped plotting symbols: consist of a closed figure and auxiliary elements, and are used to represent area logos. For example, the accident control area uses dotted lines to indicate the edge, and uses green fill to distinguish different areas.


3.3 Symbol Usage Specifications

Color:Point symbols use specific colors (red, yellow, blue, green), and line and surface symbols are uniformly red. For example, the color of the hazard source symbol is yellow (R:255, G:255, B:0).

Size:The minimum size of a point symbol is 32×32 pixels, the thickness of the basic graphic border is 1 pixel, and the size of the text identification area is 8×32 pixels. The line width of linear and surface symbols is not less than 2 pixels.

Transparency:The transparency of point and surface symbols is set in percentage form to ensure that it does not affect the display of important features in the base map.


4. Implementation Suggestions

4.1 Systematic Implementation

  • Establish a unified symbol library management system to store and call standardized symbols.
  • Develop emergency mapping software that meets the requirements of the standard to ensure that symbol classification, coding and usage specifications are implemented.
  • Carry out professional training for emergency management staff to improve their understanding and application of the standard.

4.2 Dynamic Labeling Suggestions

When dynamically labeling, the appropriate labeling method should be selected in combination with the specific event type. For example, in earthquake disaster mapping, leader labeling can be used to indicate the epicenter location and the scope of impact.

4.3 Expansion and Optimization

  • Appropriately expand new emergency mapping symbols according to regional characteristics and emergency event types.
  • Update the standard regularly to ensure that it is consistent with the needs of emergency management practice.
