Introduction

The importance of dispersion treatment before particle size determination of refractory metal and its compound powders

Refractory metals, such as tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum and their compounds (such as tungsten carbide), have important applications in modern industry, especially in the fields of high temperature and wear resistance. However, these powders are usually in a state of agglomeration and need to be dispersed before being used directly for particle size analysis to obtain accurate results.

Background of standard formulation and technological evolution

This standard GB/T 37561-2019 was issued in 2019 and replaced the old dispersion treatment method. Its formulation is based on the following requirements:

  • Solve the agglomeration problem: Refractory metal powders are prone to agglomeration, which affects the accuracy of particle size analysis.
  • Improve measurement accuracy: Ensure the reliability of particle size distribution data through standardized dispersion treatment.
  • Unified industry standards: Establish unified technical specifications for domestic related enterprises.

Detailed interpretation of dispersion treatment methods

This standard specifies the specific steps for the dispersion treatment of refractory metal powders, including:

  1. Equipment selection: Use grinding bottle and tungsten rod for grinding.
  2. Operation process: Place the powder in the grinding bottle, add an appropriate amount of grinding rod, and grind on the grinder at a speed of 145 r/min for 60 minutes ± 0.25 minutes.
  3. Sieving treatment: After grinding, use an 850μm (20 mesh) sieve to separate the grinding rod and collect the powder.

Comparative analysis of standard frameworks

Dimensions Old standard New standard GB/T 37561—2019
Equipment requirements Grinding machine speed is not specified Grinding machine speed is clearly specified to be 145 r/min±5 r/min
Powder dosage Uniformly use 30g Distinguish between tungsten and molybdenum and tungsten carbide, use 30g±0.1g and 50g±0.1g respectively
Dispersion time No detailed regulations Specify 60 minutes ± 0.25 minutes, including grinding rod uniformity inspection

Implementation suggestions and precautions

Case study: A tungsten powder production company

  • The company uses grinding bottles produced by Zhuzhou Cemented Carbide Group Co., Ltd., which meet the requirements of an inner diameter of 60mm±3mm.
  • If the grinding rod is found to be uneven during the grinding process, stop and readjust it immediately to ensure the dispersion effect.
  • After grinding, use 850μm sieve for screening, and properly store the sample for particle size analysis.
