Background Introduction: With the wide application of carbon materials in metallurgy, chemical industry and other fields, it is particularly important to accurately determine their nitrogen content. As an efficient and accurate detection method, the Dumas combustion method has become the core technology of the industry standard GB/T 37588—2019.

Background of Standardization

This standard is managed by the National Technical Committee for Steel Standardization, combined with advanced domestic and foreign detection technologies, and formulated according to the characteristics of carbon materials. The standard drafting units include authoritative institutions such as the National Graphite Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center and Anhui Hongchang New Materials Co., Ltd., ensuring its scientificity and practicality.

Technical Principles and Methods

The Dumas combustion method converts nitrogen in the sample into nitrogen and nitric oxide through high-temperature combustion, and uses a thermal conductivity detector for quantitative analysis. The following are the specific steps:

  1. Sample preparation:The carbon material is crushed to less than 0.075mm and dried at 105°C for 2 hours.
  2. Combustion process:In a high-purity oxygen environment, the sample undergoes high-temperature combustion at 900-1050°C to release nitrogen and nitrogen oxides.
  3. Gas treatment:The absorbent is used to remove interfering components such as carbon dioxide and water vapor, and the remaining nitrogen oxides flow into the catalytic furnace to be reduced to pure nitrogen.
  4. Detection and calculation:The nitrogen content is measured by a thermal conductivity detector, and the instrument microprocessor automatically calculates the nitrogen mass fraction in the sample.
