Introduction

Interpretation of the core content of the standard

Principle of the method

The standard specifies three ultrasonic C-scan methods:

  • Contact pulse reflection method: Assess quality by the change in the amplitude of the defect reflection wave
  • Water immersion pulse reflection method: Detect the change in the bottom echo using a water-coupled medium
  • Water spray pulse penetration method: Assess quality based on the change in the intensity of the transmitted wave

Technical evolution analysis

Compared with the old version of the standard, the 2020 version has the following major improvements:

  1. New Water spray penetration method detection scheme
  2. Clarify the accuracy requirements of the mechanical scanning system
  3. Refine the inspection specification for curved surface components

Implementation suggestions

Typical application cases

Inspection of aviation composite materials: The carbon fiber wing of a certain type of aircraft was inspected by water immersion pulse reflection method, and a 5MHz focused probe was selected. Three Φ6mm delamination defects were found. After anatomical verification, the error with the C-scan result was <0.5mm.

Key control points

  • The coupling agent temperature should be controlled at 10-35℃
  • Special comparison test blocks are required for curved surface components
  • The scanning interval should not exceed 1/2 of the 6dB landing point of the defect
