Introduction

Analysis of the core content of the standard

Test method Scope of application Typical materials Minimum thickness requirement
Rockwell hardness(GB/T230.1) Quenched and tempered parts (HRC), thin parts (HRA) Alloy steel, tool steel 0.8mm(HRC)
Brinell hardness(GB/T231.1) Annealed/normalized parts (≤450HBW) Carbon structural steel 1.5×indentation depth
Vickers hardness(GB/T4340.1) Hardened layer/microstructure Nitrided parts, thin plates 0.04mm(HV0.1)

Key implementation points

Hardness tester management specifications

Standard requirements for hardness testers must:

  • Verify with a standard block before daily use, and the error shall not exceed the value specified in GB/T230.2
  • Indenter surface roughness Ra≤0.1μm
  • Verification period ≤12 months

Surface correction technology

For specimens with a radius of curvature of less than 20mm, correction is required according to Appendix C:

  • Correction coefficient for cylindrical Vickers hardness can reach 0.85-1.15
  • Maximum correction value for spherical Rockwell hardness is 3HRC

Analysis of standard evolution

Innovations of this standard:

  1. Uniform use of carbide balls to replace steel ball Brinell indenters
  2. New standardized application of Leeb hardness (GB/T17394)
  3. Clear limitations of conversion between hardness value and tensile strength
