Introduction

Interpretation of the core content of the standard

GB/T41008-2021 is my country's first national standard specifically formulated for biodegradable drinking straws, which stipulates the technical requirements for the entire life cycle of straws with biodegradable materials such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polybutylene succinate (PBS) as the main raw materials.

Degradation performance grading system

The standard innovatively establishes degradation requirements for multiple environmental scenarios:

  • Industrial composting: must meet the requirements of biological decomposition rate, disintegration rate (≥90%) and ecotoxicity at the same time
  • Household composting: disintegration test cycle extended to 12 months
  • Marine environment: refer to GB/T40612 to determine carbon dioxide release

Typical case: Under composting conditions at 58°C, the biodegradation rate of a PLA straw reached 92.3% in 180 days, and the survival rate in the earthworm toxicity test was 100%.


Implementation difficulties and solutions

Raw material control

The standard requires that raw materials must be certified for food contact materials. It is recommended that companies:

  1. Establish a resin supplier file and request FDA/GB 4806.7 dual certification documents
  2. Test the ash content of each batch (≤0.1%)

Process optimization

For the common problem of uneven wall thickness:

  • Extrusion temperature is controlled at 170-190℃ (PLA material)
  • Use a laser diameter gauge to monitor the tube diameter in real time

Standard evolution analysis

The main differences between this standard and international standards such as EN13432:2000 and ASTM D6400 are:

  • Newly added marine degradation test path
  • Clearly defined limits for 12 heavy metals, stricter than EU REACH regulations
  • Unique Chinese-style indicators such as spoon-shaped straw expansion rate (≥65%)
