Introduction

Interpretation of the National Standard of the People's Republic of China GB/T 44523-2024

1. Overview of the Standard

GB/T 44523-2024 "General Rules for Safety Signs and Hazard Pictorial Graphics for Continuous Handling Machinery" specifies the general rules for the design and application of safety signs and hazard pictorial graphics for continuous handling machinery, and is applicable to various types of continuous handling machinery defined in GB/T14521.

2. Background of Standard Formulation

With the development of industrial automation, continuous handling machinery is increasingly used in various fields. However, these mechanical equipment often involve complex operations and potential dangerous factors, such as mechanical movement, high temperature and high pressure. In order to ensure the safety of operators, unified and standardized safety signs and hazard pictorial graphics are particularly important. The formulation of this standard aims to provide a scientific and unified identification system to help relevant personnel quickly identify hazards and take corresponding protective measures.

3. Comparison of standard frameworks

Standard dimensions GB/T 44523—2024 Related international standards
Term definitions Specifies terms such as safety signs and hazard pictograms in detail. Consistent with international standards such as ISO 3864-1:2011.
Color specifications Specifies the color requirements for symbol boxes, pictogram boxes, and text boxes to ensure uniform visual recognition. Conforms to the relevant provisions of ANSI Z535:2008 and BS 5499-10:2014.
Danger level classification According to the degree of danger, three levels of "Danger", "Warning" and "Caution" are used for identification. Similar to the classification method in ISO 7010:2019 standard.

4. Interpretation of the core content of the standard

4.1 Types and structures of safety signs

According to GB/T 44523-2024, there are four main standard types of safety signs: double-frame type, three-frame type, combination of graphic frame and text frame, and two graphic frame types. The selection of these types needs to take into account factors such as the language environment, legal regulations and installation space of the product sales area to ensure the best expression effect.

Case Study: Application of Double-Frame Safety Signs

For example, double-frame safety signs used on mechanical equipment usually consist of a symbol frame and a text frame. The symbol frame contains the safety warning symbol and one of the three warning words (attention, warning, danger), while the text frame provides a text message describing the danger, explaining the consequences of the accident, and guiding how to avoid the danger.

4.2 Design principles for hazard graphics

Hazard graphics are graphical descriptions of dangers, which are divided into two types: describing dangers and avoiding dangers. An excellent describing danger graphic should clearly identify the danger and vividly depict the consequences of non-compliance; while an avoiding danger graphic should clearly indicate how to avoid risks.

4.3 Color Standards for Safety Signs

Warning Word Symbol Box Color Graphic Box Color Text Box Color
Danger White Text on Red Background Black Graphic on White Background White Text on Black Background
Warning Black Text on Orange Background Black Graphic on Yellow Background Black Text on Orange Background
Caution Black Text on Yellow Background Black Graphic on White Background Black text on yellow background

5. Implementation recommendations

5.1 Requirements for setting safety signs

  • Ensure that safety signs are set in conspicuous and easily visible locations to avoid being blocked by other objects.
  • Choose appropriate types and color combinations according to different hazardous areas.
  • Check the status of safety signs regularly and replace damaged or unclear signs in a timely manner.

5.2 Application of hazard icons

  • Choose appropriate descriptions and avoidance icons according to specific hazard types.
  • Ensure that the icon design is intuitive and easy to understand, especially for non-professionals to identify.
  • Provide corresponding text information in the operating and maintenance instructions to supplement the deficiencies of the icons.

5.3 Regular inspection and maintenance

It is recommended that enterprises establish a regular safety sign inspection mechanism, including daily inspections and periodic comprehensive inspections, to ensure that all safety signs are in good condition. At the same time, a corresponding maintenance plan should be formulated to deal with damaged or aged signs in a timely manner.

Implementation case: Safety sign improvement of continuous handling machinery of a logistics company

The company redesigned the safety signs and hazard icons on its continuous handling machinery by introducing the GB/T 44523-2024 standard. For example, a double-frame safety sign of "No walking or standing on the conveyor" is set on the conveyor, and a corresponding text description is provided in the equipment operating manual, which significantly reduces the accident rate caused by misoperation.
