In-depth Analysis of the National Standard for Elderly-Friendly Furniture Design
GB/T 46015-2025, "Guidelines for Elderly-Friendly Furniture Design," is my country's first national standard specifically targeting furniture design for the elderly. It will be officially released and implemented in 2025. Proposed by the China Light Industry Federation and managed by the National Technical Committee for Furniture Standardization (SAC/TC 480), the standard was jointly drafted by over 50 organizations, including the Shenzhen Furniture Research and Development Institute and the Shanghai Quality Supervision, Inspection and Technology Research Institute.
Background and Significance of the Standard
As my country's population continues to age, by the end of 2023, the number of people aged 60 and over will exceed 280 million, accounting for 19.8% of the total population. The elderly population's demand for an age-friendly home environment is becoming increasingly prominent, but traditional furniture designs often fail to meet the specific needs of the elderly due to aging. The body size and shape of the elderly change significantly. For example, the 50th percentile height for men aged 61-70 is 1652mm, and for women is 1541mm, both significantly lower than those of younger people. This change directly affects the functional and dimensional design of furniture. For example, the height of storage cabinets needs to be adjusted to a range that is accessible to the elderly (300-1600mm).
Decline in biomechanical characteristics
Older people’s muscle strength decreases by approximately 30-40%, and their grip strength decreases by 20-30%, which directly affects the design of furniture control. The operating forces such as pushing, pulling, and lifting force decrease, requiring the opening force of furniture doors, drawers, and other components to be controlled within the appropriate range of 1.5-8N.
Changes in sensory abilities
In terms of vision, the elderly require stronger working light, their color perception decreases, and their recognition of blue and purple decreases. In terms of hearing, they lose the ability to distinguish high-frequency sounds and become insensitive to alarm prompts. In terms of touch, the ability to perceive shape, temperature, and texture decreases, increasing the risk of operational errors and burns.
Functional configuration and size design specifications
Ability level adaptation principle
The standard divides the abilities of the elderly into five levels (0-4), requiring that the functional configuration of furniture be matched to the user’s ability level. There are significant differences in the functional needs of furniture among elderly users of different levels:

These dimensions are based on statistical data on the body dimensions of Chinese elderly people and are designed using maximum, minimum, average, and adjustability criteria.

Chapter 6.2 of the standard specifies the technical requirements for smart applications in senior-friendly furniture, emphasizing that smart designs must comply with GB/T 43814-2024, "General Technical Requirements for Smart Furniture," and that controllability must be adapted to the ability level of the elderly.
Smart interactive designs must provide multiple information prompts (sound, light, vibration, text, etc.). Personal information collection must comply with GB/T 35273-2020, "Personal Information Security Specification," and employ notification methods suitable for the elderly, such as voice reading. Remote health status monitoring functions must comply with the requirements of the GB/T 37733 series of standards.
Material Selection and Structural Design
Material Selection Criteria
Senior-friendly furniture should utilize natural and environmentally friendly materials. Hazardous substance limits should be appropriately tightened beyond those in compliance with mandatory standards. Key considerations include: avoiding materials with strong chemical odors; selecting soft-touch materials for contact areas; using matte surfaces to prevent glare; and ensuring that power handles have a high coefficient of friction.
Structural Safety Requirements
In addition to complying with GB 28008, "Technical Specification for Furniture Structural Safety," design features should include safety features (such as damping systems), removable structures (for easier cleaning), and adjustable mechanisms (for height and angle adjustment). The total weight of frequently moved furniture should not exceed 8kg, and that of occasionally moved furniture should not exceed 20kg.
Design Implementation Process and Methods
Chapter 7 of the standard specifies the complete process for senior-friendly furniture design, including three stages: research and analysis, design proposal development, and design review.

Research should be conducted on the specific characteristics of the intended users, gathering information on the needs and expectations of seniors and related personnel regarding furniture products, and understanding the problems encountered when using existing products. Market analysis should examine the strengths and weaknesses of similar products and monitor industry trends and technological developments.

Design requirements should be allocated based on the principles of prioritizing safety, focusing on ease of use and comfort, and balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders and sustainability. When safety and other characteristics conflict, safety design should be prioritized.

Enterprise Implementation Recommendations
Furniture manufacturers should establish dedicated senior-friendly furniture R&D teams to deeply understand the needs of senior users and translate the standard's requirements into specific product design specifications. It is recommended that this standard be implemented in phases: the first phase will focus on developing basic elderly-friendly furniture (such as chairs and beds); the second phase will develop intelligent elderly-friendly products; and the third phase will achieve full elderly-friendly coverage.
Industry Development Outlook
With the implementation and popularization of the elderly-friendly furniture standard, future products will develop in the direction of personalized customization, intelligent interconnection, and multi-functional integration. It is recommended that the industry establish an elderly-friendly furniture certification system, strengthen designer training, and promote the widespread application of elderly-friendly furniture design concepts.
