Scope

This part of GB/T 5169 specifies a small-scale laboratory screening method for comparing the relative combustion characteristics of plastic and other non-metallic material samples and their resistance to burn-through. The ignition source of the comparison test is a flame ignition source with a nominal power of 500 W. This method is applicable to solid materials and foamed plastics with an apparent density equal to or greater than 250 k9/m3 (determined by the method specified in ISO 845). This method is not applicable to thin materials which will crumble in fire but not ignite, for which ISO 9773 should be used. This test method is used to characterize materials, e.g. for quality control purposes, but is not suitable for assessing the fire behavior of building materials and construction appliances. This test method can be used for the pre-selection of materials, but the thickness of the material must be equal to the minimum thickness of the actual application in order to obtain definite results. While these results provide some of the properties of the plastic used, they must not be relied upon alone to guarantee safety in use. Note: The test results are affected by material components and material properties, the former such as colorants, fillers and flame retardants, the latter such as the direction of anisotropy and molecular weight, etc. The material classification method specified in this test method (see 8.3.7) can be used for product quality assurance or pre-selection of product component materials.
